About The Middle Principle

A simple shared language for responsible AI-assisted work.

Origin of the idea

The Middle Principle began late one night in Greater Manchester. While delivering for Uber Eats and listening to a Gary Vaynerchuk podcast at 1:30am, Christopher Fewster realised something simple and urgent: this is how everyone should use AI, and the practice needed to be grounded around it.

People were already using generative AI with increasing fluency, but without a shared model for where human thinking must remain decisive. The insight was structural. Humans should always start and finish the work. AI belongs in the middle — accelerating effort without inheriting purpose or responsibility.

Purpose

The model exists to help individuals, educators, organisations and leaders keep human agency intact while making good use of AI. It is designed to be taught, remembered and applied without specialised jargon.

Christopher Fewster

Christopher Fewster is an educator based in Greater Manchester with five years’ experience specialising in computer science. An AI user since 2022, he has recently completed further study in AI in education. He created The Middle Principle to give people a simple shared language for using AI without outsourcing human direction, judgment or responsibility.

The interactive checklist stores selections only in your browser. Contact form submissions are emailed to contact@middleprinciple.com and are not stored in a website database. Do not include sensitive personal data beyond what is needed for a reply.

Cookies

Necessary cookies support security, sessions and short-lived white-paper download unlocks. Analytics cookies and scripts (Google Analytics 4, plus first-party page/download counts stored in our database) load only after you accept analytics in the cookie banner. Marketing preferences are stored for future campaign tags and stay off unless you enable them. You can change your choice anytime via Cookie settings in the footer.

White paper downloads

When you download the PDF, we ask for your email and marketing consent. We store your email, consent status and download source in Supabase so we can send occasional emails about The Middle Principle and measure downloads. Emails are sent using Resend from our domain. You can unsubscribe by emailing chris@middleprinciple.com.

Retention

Analytics events are kept to understand site usage and improve the white paper. Lead records are kept while you remain subscribed or until you ask us to delete them. We do not sell personal data.
