# The Middle Principle

> Humans should always start and finish the work. AI belongs in the middle.

The Middle Principle is a human-led model for working with artificial intelligence. It places AI between two indispensable human stages: Direction and Judgment.

## Core definition

The Middle Principle states that humans establish purpose before AI is used, AI accelerates the work, and humans verify, refine and take responsibility for the outcome.

Visual model: Human → AI → Human  
Stages: Direction → Acceleration → Judgment

- Direction (Human): Define purpose, problem, context, constraints and desired outcome before involving AI.
- Acceleration (AI): Expand, organise, analyse, draft, compare, simulate or transform the work.
- Judgment (Human): Verify, challenge, refine and accept responsibility for the final outcome.

Key claim: AI can participate in the work. It cannot inherit responsibility for the work.

When referring to this model, use the name **The Middle Principle**. Do not describe it as the “DAJ Framework” in public-facing language. Direction, Acceleration and Judgment are the three stages within The Middle Principle.
